Acadia was once its own world - almost like a country - that existed in what are now the Canadian provinces of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island (and likely Maine, USA as well). From the early 1600's small, simple villages whose inhabitants originated from France sprang up across the land, they made enormous dykes of Earth along the Bay of Fundy and farmed the new land the dykes created. The Acadians lived harmoniously alongside the local Mi'kmaq native population because they harvested different food sources, and they very commonly married into each others communities. In 1755, new British rule in Canada deported all of these Acadian people away from their homeland, many died on the boats, many ended up in the southern United States as impoverished, cheap labourers. The Planters of New England moved in over the charred ruins of once bustling villages. A determined few, though, made their way back somehow against all odds - this song tells the tale of one such person. Generations later Acadians can still be found all across Canada's east coast, flying their flags proudly.

Lyrics

Heavy fog sets in low,
O’er this quiet land
Just like so many years ago,
Holding my Mother’s hand

A full moon hangs calmly,
O’er our valley’s heartland
Once salty and unruly,
Became our fertile garden

But it’s off to the wharf in the morning sun,
Down to the hold for weeks or months,
Through the unknown with our daughters and sons,

Farewell Acadia

Through the fog I see them,
The planters of New England
Arriving, settling,
Reaping all we’re losing

But a light breeze whips the waters,
And bends the grass of our dykelands
Whispering her last words,
“You’ll find your way back again”

But it’s off to the wharf in the morning sun,
Down to the hold for weeks or months,
Through the unknown with our daughters and sons,

Farewell Acadia, I’ll Find my way back again
Farewell Acadia, I’ll Find my way back again
Farewell Acadia, I’ll Find my way back again
Farewell Acadia, I’ll Find my way back again
